SYMPHONY
From the book Rhythm of Life (copyright 2015)

We sit and wait in our seat,
The pubic still streams in –
Anticipation can be sweet:
The music shall begin!

At last the lights are dimmed and out
Musicians try their bows –
The audience still coughs about
In endless darkened rows.

The maestro comes and takes his bow
As though he does not care.
He lifts his hands.
There: – silence now –
And all are so aware!

The symphony of life begins
With small and tender sounds:
Hear how the trumpet’s solo wins!
And presto’s horn abounds!

The violins will sing of Spring,
Of meadows gold and green.
Yes, in this life you are the king!
What beauty you have seen!

And then allegro fills the air
With warmth and fuller tone:
A bit of silver in your hair.
But – you are not alone.

And then adagio. Calm and mild.
A touch of fate’s cool hands;
Once more the sweet sounds of a child.
And then – the music ends.

When was the climax of these sounds?
Was it more peace than strife?
When you were dancing eager rounds –
Was it worth living life?

ART
From the book Rhythm of Life (copyright 2015)

You know, I like art – if original
Because it has value to me.
I looked for an expert to help me choose –
Of course, for a quite handsome fee.

So one day we went to a gallery
To see an old master for sale.
The expert explained all the facets to me –
It made quite a beautiful tale.

“Mow see the two shoes that are standing there.
The fact that the candle is lit –
The painter intended to tell us much
With spirit, with wisdom, and wit.”

“And look at the lines of the brush he used
You can’t find a single mistake!”
I had to admit that the work was good.

I bought it.
Too bad – – it was fake!
